Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2026-11-01
This policy explains what CalScope (the "app"), made by appdevgpt ("we"), collects, why, and what you can do about it. In short: your food diary and body details stay on your phone; photos you scan are sent to be analyzed and are not stored by us; we don't sell your data or show ads.
Information that stays on your phone
The following is saved only on your device. We don't receive it:
- Profile details you enter: gender, date of birth, height, weight, goal weight and activity level
- Your diary: meals, water, exercise, weight entries, progress photos, streaks and badges
- Settings such as units, appearance and reminders
Information sent to our servers
- An anonymous account ID. The app signs in with Firebase Authentication without a name, email address or password, so your requests can be counted and protected from abuse.
- Photos you scan (meals and nutrition labels) and corrections you type with "Fix results". They are sent over an encrypted connection to our server, which passes them to Anthropic's Claude AI to estimate the foods and nutrition. We don't store the photos; they are discarded once the estimate is returned.
- Barcode numbers you scan. Our server looks them up in the Open Food Facts database; Open Food Facts receives only the barcode number, not your ID.
- A daily usage count: your anonymous ID, the date and how many AI scans you used, so the free limit of 5 AI scans a day can be applied.
Crash reports and usage statistics
To find bugs and understand which features are used, the app uses Firebase Crashlytics and Google Analytics for Firebase. They collect technical information such as device model, operating system and app version, crash details, an installation ID, approximate location derived from the IP address (country or city), and events such as screens opened. On Android this may include the device's advertising ID. We use this information only to run and improve the app, not for advertising.
What we don't do
- We don't sell or rent your personal information.
- We don't show ads or share your information with advertisers.
- We don't ask for your name, email address or contacts.
Service providers
We rely on these companies to run the app. Each processes data only to provide its service to us:
- Google (Firebase and Google Cloud): sign-in, servers, scan counts, crash reports and analytics — policies.google.com/privacy
- Anthropic (Claude): analyzing meal and label photos. Under Anthropic's commercial terms, data sent through its API is not used to train its models — anthropic.com/legal/privacy
- Open Food Facts: product information for barcodes — world.openfoodfacts.org/privacy
Where information is processed
Our servers and service providers are in the United States. If you use the app from elsewhere, your information is transferred to and processed in the United States.
How long we keep information
- Scanned photos and corrections: not stored by us after the estimate is returned. Anthropic may keep API data for a limited time under its own policy for safety and abuse prevention.
- Daily usage counts: kept to apply limits and prevent abuse, and deleted on request.
- Crash reports: 90 days. Usage statistics: at most 14 months.
Your choices and rights
- Delete your data on the phone at any time with Profile → Delete account, or by uninstalling the app.
- Ask us to access or delete the information on our servers linked to your app, or object to how it is used, by writing to calscope@appdevgpt.com. We'll answer within 30 days.
- Depending on where you live (for example the EU, UK or California) you may have further rights under local law, including the right to complain to a data protection authority.
Health information
CalScope is a wellness tool, not a medical service. Body and diet details you enter stay on your phone, except the photos and corrections you choose to send for analysis.
Children
CalScope is not meant for children under 13 (under 16 in the EU and UK), and we don't knowingly collect their information. If you believe a child has used the app, contact us and we'll delete what we hold.
Security
Information is sent over encrypted connections, and our servers allow each anonymous account to reach only its own data. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information.
Changes to this policy
If we change what the app collects (for example when account sign-in or syncing arrives), we'll update this page and its date, and tell you in the app when the change is significant.
